Malene Helbak

Malene Helbaks striped jugs, bowls and mugs is a real success.
Her dishes, plates, cups and bowls are all everyday objects found in endless variations. Every product is unique because it is decorated by hand.

Malene Helbak: "I make design that makes a difference. Every object has been made to create an experience. Small details in form, decoration and color can be an eye-opener and underline a
rediscovery of trivial everyday items. It just might ad a better taste when you serve coffee or dinner in a handmade product.

Multifunctional

"My mugs, plates and bowls are shaped so they can fulfill several functions. A cup without handle makes it more usable. Suddenly, it can also be used for pencils or as a vase, and it gives both me as a designer and the user more freedom. If the function is not predefined, I’m sure that we will be more aware of which product we use and why we use them, "says Malene Helbak on her design.

Her teqnique

Malene Helbak works with earthenware and a clear transperent glaze. It is the perfect base for this special paper-decorating technique called transfer printing.

The paper is placed by hand after the 2. glaze and afterwards the product is burnt for teh third time at low temperature, approx. 800 degrees. This technique allows Malene Helbak to work with a very wide color gamut and very specific designs.

Malene Helbak graduated from the Kolding School of Design in 1997.
